Established by Maria Theresa of Austria in 1776, the “Pinacoteca di Brera” is a former art collection once dedicated to the training of “Brera Academy of Fine Arts” students. In 1805 Napoleon transformed it in a museum.
It is located in a large cultural complex beside the Braidense Library, the Astronomic Observatory, the Botanical Garden, the Lombardy Science and Literature Institute and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts.
Nowadays, it hosts one of the most important paintings collections in Italy, distributed in 11 halls. The most important exhibited painters are Andrea Mantegna, Caravaggio, Raffaello Sanzio, Giovanni Bellini, Donato Bramante, Correggio, Francesco Hayez, Umberto Boccioni and Amedeo Modigliani.
